Ayahuasca: What is it?

Ayahuasca: What is it?

Though people of many cultures and religions have been drinking Ayahuasca ceremonially for thousands of years, you may have heard the name more commonly used throughout the past decade. Ayahuasca, called “The Mother” or “Aya” for short, has been used for over 5000 years by shamans, healers, and spiritual teachers as a gateway to the expansion of the soul. The medicine is in the form of a thick brew that traditionally combines a jungle vine, Banisteriopsis caapi (which translates to ‘vine of the soul’ or ‘vine with a soul’), and either chacruna (Psychotria viridis) or chagropanga (Diplopterys cabrerana).

The resulting drink that is extracted from the Ayahuasca plant is the strongest known source of DMT, which is a neurotransmitter produced naturally from the pineal gland and is responsible for dreams in the REM state of rest. In other words, when you fall asleep or meditate, your brain will begin to secrete its own chemical equivalent of DMT. Ayahuasca is known for and capable of inducing altered states of consciousness lasting between 4 to 8 hours and whose effects will range from relatively mild to mind-blowingly visionary.

Please know: Ayahuasca is NOT a drug, nor is it addictive.

The following is an excerpt from Soul Herbs, an informational website that answers many questions about Ayahuasca and her magic.

“About 20 minutes after ingestion of ayahuasca, consciousness is altered, changing brain waves. Normally there is a reduction in respiratory rate, decreased metabolism, blood pressure, change in pH, etc. and thereby increases hearing sensitivity, smell, vision and touch.

In this paranormal ability level, emerges spontaneously awakening neurons, increasing the intellectual and creative capacity.

The result is the gradual pacification of personality and mindreducing anxiety and fearbalancing nervous system – reason and emotion – thus allowing the brain to gradually pass Beta state (normal activity) to Alpha waves ( relaxation) and reaching the deep Theta state where occurring mystical experiences of spiritual ecstasy.

These experiences are usually associated with personal insights, idealizations intellectual, emotional reactions and profound spiritual and mystical experiences.”

(Check out the website to read the full article or read about other benefit and effects of Aya.)

Ayahuasca shows you many things about yourself, your life, and the universe. Some people bring an intention into the ceremony, which can help focus your journey or visions, but Ayahuasca responds to what you need. Sometimes, this may mean that you are shown something different that you intended to work on, because the divine presence of the medicine knows what you must focus your energy on in order to clear away anything that does not serve you on your soul’s true path.

During the Wisdom Quest, the Ayahuasca ceremony will be guided by experienced shaman and energy healer Manex Ibar. In any plant medicine ceremony, it is important to make sure that the ceremony guides will hold space for you, supporting you in your needs and providing a safe environment mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Manex has been holding space for plant medicine ceremonies for over a decade, and has extensive personal experience with Ayahuasca. You will be safe and in good hands.  His music degree and sound engineering experience combined with the indigenous chants, singing techniques, and instruments, Manex creates a unique musical experience during ceremony to help you go further.  With his brother and sister, both prolific artists, they are designing a soundscape experience for modern plant ceremonies, allowing for live improvisation over a composed soundbed using specific consciousness frequencies and ancient instruments that provide a powerful experience of going deeper within.
